WALKING TOUR

Cimarron, NM

Once a hotbed for gun-toting, lawless outliers, the town of Cimarron thankfully no longer lives up to its namesake, (Cimarron is Spanish for “wild and unruly”). Peaceful and historically rich, there is no better way to experience this former pioneer town than with their self-guided Walking Tour.

Get started by picking up a brochure at the Chamber of Commerce’s Visitor Center. The tour begins less than a mile from there, at the Lucien B. Maxwell House. Wind your way through gravesites, hotels, former hardware stores and livery stables, and end up on the land grant that staged the beginnings of the Colfax County War of 1875.
